The application deadline for the PhD course "Resource development versus other community sustainability options?" is June 15. The course is organized by the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Extractive Industries, and it takes place Aug 29 to Sept 4, 2016 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

"Arctic Floating University", joint scientific and educational project implemented by NArFU anв Northern Branch of RosHydroMet, supported by the Russian Geographical Society started its eighth Arctic expedition.

The final stage of the youth project contest "Discover the Arctic" was held at Northern (Arctic) Federal University (Russia) in the framework of the all-Russian conference "The Arctic as a national megaproject: personnel and research support"



On August 17-18, 2016, the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland will organize a seminar “New Forms of Law and Governance for and from the Arctic”, which will look at research approaches to explore the role of law and other institutions in governance of natural resources in the Arctic. [link]

Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University has announced plans to establish the number of scientific vehicle testing facilities for the Arctic zone of Russia. According to plan NEFU will lead experimental methods and tests of modern technologies.



Finland's former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen, a Friend of UArctic, has been received the Arctic Hero prize during the High North Dialogue meeting at Nord University in Bodø, Norway. Lipponen remarked, "This is my Nobel prize" on receiving the award. [Source: High North News, in Norwegian].

UArctic Congress 2016 updates

The keynote speakers for the Science Section of the UArctic Congress 2016 have been announced, and the early-bird registration deadline has been extended until June 15.

The French embassy in Sweden in collaboration with Umeå University organize the French-Nordic event: The Urban Arctic. It is part of a series of seminars that will take place in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden during 2016. You will find more information about this event from the enclosed invitation or on the website. 


The Climate and Air Quality Group, under the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM), invites proposals for its Call for projects. This supports projects that describe the interaction between climate and air issues in the Nordic and Arctic region. The deadline for this call is 16 June 2016.
