The Nordic Research Network for Sami and Indigenous Law (NORSIL) organizes the NORSIL Seminar in Luleå, Sweden on November 5-6, 2024. The Network's current host, Luleå University of Technology, organized Seminars. The Seminar featured two keynote presentations highlighting Sámi land rights and Siida law in Norway and Finland. Despite being two separate original representations, they spoke to each other, arguing that Sámi laws could stand independently of state law or international law. After the keynote, several scholarly presentations and subsequent panel discussions focused on current and ongoing developments in research on Sámi in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Six PhD candidates from these countries discussed their doctoral projects on cross-cutting topics, including but not limited to the right to self-determination and participation in national, regional, and international law instruments. In addition, the presentations included extensive discussions of case law in the three countries regarding Sámi land rights. Most of the seminar participants were members of the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Law.
