The annual travelling symposium Calotte Academy begins its tour from Inari, Finland on June 1. With perceptions of the Arctic as its main focus, the 2017 Calotte Academy examines the perspectives of different Arctic actors as well as different northern discourses.

From Inari the symposium will continue through Kirkenes, Norway to Murmansk and Apatity, Russia, after which the Academy participants will join the ICASS IX conference in Umeå, Sweden. The participants attending the touring symposium are mostly early career scientists from the Nordic countries, Central Europe, Russia, China and USA.

The Calotte Academy has been arranged annually since 1991 with an aim to bring together students, other experts, local stakeholders as well as scientists with different academic backgrounds and in different stages of their academic careers. The founder of the Calotte Academy, Professor Lassi Heininen, sees the added value of the Calotte Academy in its explicit aim to create an alternative model for conventional academic conferences which contributes to discussions between the participants and the scientific community as well as local and political actors.

The Calotte Academy 2017 is arranged in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland, Sámi Education Institute of Inari, Barents Institute at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Luzin Institute for Economic Studies at Kola Science Center and Karelian Research Center of Russian Academy of Sciences. It is a part of the activities of the UArctic and Northern Research Forum joint Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security. The Calotte Academy receives financial support from University of Lapland, Barents Institute and Norwegian Barents Secretariat.
