Federal Research Center "Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (FRC KSC RAS) is a comprehensive scientific institution that carries out fundamental studies of high-latitude environment in the Euro-Arctic region and provides a scientific basis for assessing the resource potential and developing a rational strategy for the North.
The Center was founded in 1930 by Alexander Fersman, member of the Academy of Sciences, as the Khibiny mountain station of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Nowadays KSC is the only Federal Research Center in Russia located beyond the Arctic Circle. The Head of the Center is Professor Sergey Krivovichev, D.Sc., Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
At present, FRC KSC RAS comprises 10 research institutes and an extensive network of support units and experimental areas, located across vast territories from Spitsbergen and Franz Josef Land in the North to Andromeda in the East and Tedino and Plesetsk in the South. There are 6 archives and museums at the Center as well. The so called "Academic Town" (Akademgorodok) and the Presidium of KSC are located in the city of Apatity (Murmansk region) since 1961.
The research staff of the Center is represented by 654 researchers, including 57 D.Sc., 222 Candidates of Science, 177 early career researchers. 10 training programs are open for postgraduate students (57 students in 2018). In addition, there are 8 Educational Departments and 4 Research and Educational Centers at KSC. 140 employees carry out educational activities.
According to the 2017 statistics, the KSC research staff prepared more than 1000 publications included into both Russian and international SCI systems, 22 monographs, 19 collections of scholarly articles, and received 19 patents.
