Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia is more than 220 years old and is one of the biggest higher educational establishments in the country. Its history began in 1797, when Emperor’s Educational House was founded in the very center of St. Petersburg. Thousands of teachers, scientists, artists, musicians, politicians and other well-known public figures have graduated from the University ever since.

On January 21, 1991 Herzen State Pedagogical Institute received status of a university and is now called the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia which is the acknowledgement of its leading role in education. In January 1998 the Government of Russia awarded the University a status of National Culture Heritage.

The University has cooperation agreements with over 150 universities, colleges and other educational establishments in 30 countries of Europe, Asia and America. The University participates in international programs, including exchange ones; conducts international workshops and conferences; implements joint educational and research projects, etc.

Nowadays the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia provides education of high professional quality. Historical background of the University and its present-day structural organization allowed for creation of a powerful educational, scientific and cultural network with dynamic connections within Russia and abroad.

Institute of the Peoples of the North at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia is a unique scientific and educational center that has been training indigenous specialists in the fields of ethnopedagogy, ethnophilology and ethnoculturology for the North, Siberia and the Far East for more than 80 years. Institute alumni work in education, culture, science, social sphere in northern regions of Russia. In terms of ethnic makeup of students and lecturers, and the number of taught and studied languages and cultures, the Institute has no analogues in Russia.
