Churapcha State Institute of Physical Education and Sports
Churapcha State Insitute of Physical Education and Sports was established in 1999. It is a successor of the Churapcha Pedagogical College (1934), Secondary Boarding School (1957) and Sports School for Children and Youth (1966). The village of Churapcha is well-known for its freestyle wrestling traditions: it is a place where the distinguished Sakha (Yakut) wrestling coach Dmitriy Korkin raised the first Olympic champions and prizewinners from Sakha (Yakut) people: Roman Dmitriev (gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich; silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal), Pavel Pinigin (gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal) and Aleksandr Ivanov (silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal).
Since 1999 the Institute prepared 987 specialists with Bachelor degree in Physical Culture, 15 Masters of Sport of international class, more than 120 Masters of Sport of Russian Federation and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), including participants of the Olympic Games in Beijing, London, prizewinners of the World and European Championships in freestyle wrestling, boxing, athletics, indigenous sports, international checkers. In 2014 the Institute won the Russian Student Union award for the training of 8 champions and prizewinners of the World competitions, and 3 champions of Russian competitions.
The Institute aims to create a system which integrates the science, education, and sport for building the human capital for sustainable development in the North.
