Beijing Normal University (BNU) grew out of the Faculty of Education of Capital Metropolitan University established in 1902, which initiated teacher training in Chinese higher education. After several times of merging and reforming since 1949, especially in the 1980s, Beijing Normal University has moved into the new age of rapid development. The University’s history is an epitome of the development of modern teacher training and higher education in China.
After the development for over a century, Beijing Normal University has become a comprehensive and research-intensive university with its main characteristics of basic discipline in sciences and humanities, teacher education and educational science. According to QA World University Rankings, in the year of 2016-2017, BNU is ranked the 257th among the world universities, the 40th beast among Asian universities, and the 8th best among the universities of Chinese mainland. The University has 18 national key disciplines, among which, the disciplines of Education, Psychology, History, Ecology and Geography are ranked the first in China according to 2016 official ranking by the Ministry of Education.
Beijing Normal University always attaches importance to international exchange and cooperation. At present, the university has established cooperative ties with about 300 universities and international organizations from more than 40 countries and regions. Each year about 3000 BNU students study abroad on exchange programmes, internships, collaborative programmes and degree programmes; above 900 international professors and scholars are invited to lecture and research at the university; and about 1500 BNU faculty members go abroad for international conference and cooperative research. The University has around 2000 long-term international students from 78 countries and regions, the scale of which ranks among top in Chinese universities.
