International Summer School "A Way to the North"

The International Summer School offers North-related classes focusing on history, environment, economics and culture of the Russian North. The School consists of four components: (1) academic program (classes), (2), Russian language classes on the topics related to the North (3), field trip program, (4) cultural program.


The idea of the School is a multidisciplinary approach to the development of the northern territories of Tyumen Region.

The outcome is the individual project “My way to the North” in which the students can present some ideas of their future participation in the North development under the supervision of experienced researchers, businessmen and political leaders in their areas of interest.

  • Historical Geography of the Northern Territories (Tyumen Region)
  • Landscape Planning and Architecture in the North
  • Environmental Problems of Development of the Northern Territories
  • Environmental Protection of the Northern Ecosystems
  • Traditional Development of the Northern Indigenous Peoples
  • Environmental Tourism
  • Innovations and Business in the North
  • Technological Development of the Northern Territories
  • International Cooperation and International Trade in the North

Russian Language learning:

  • Russian Language & Culture Module (10 hours). It includes interactive lessons of Russian language (grammar & vocabulary relevant to the School topics) and insights into Russian culture.

  • Presentation of the Historical Program “Siberian Conquest”
  • Wooden Architecture of Tyumen
  • Archeological Station “Andreevskie Lakes”
  • Biological Station  «Kuchak Lake»
  • North Development Research Institute (Russian Academy of Sciences)
  • Tyumen Chamber of Commerce
  • Tyumen Center of Healthy Lifestyle
  • Schlumberger Siberian Training Center
  • Techno center of Tyumen University
  • Center of Nature and History Studies

Cultural program:

  • Evenings with Russian families
  • Tour «Northern Legends» (aboriginal settlements)                
  • Siberian Husky tour
  • Thermal hot springs (spa center)

Youth International Forum “Road of Friendship”:

  • Tobolsk tour (one of top 10 cities of Russia)
  • Khanty-Mansiisk tour (the venue of the Biathlon World Championships )
  • Archeological park (geological sites, unique archeology, paleolith sites)
  • National park «Samarovo»
  • One-day trip to aboriginal settlement (northern indigenous peoples Khanty and Mansi)
  • Natural Resources and Economics of the Northern Territories
  • Students projects “Way to Success”, “My Way to the North”
  • Day at the Ob river (traditional meals, ceremonies, games)

 

Fees:

600$ – Academic, Field Trips and Cultural programs July 25 – August 8, 2014
(including tuition, room, out-of-class activities and events)

500$ – “Road of Friendship” tour August 8–12, 2014
including 5 day trip, accommodation, 2 meals a day, excursions)
