The Imagined Arctic

The course addresses outside representations of the Arctic in a selection of both fictional and non-fictional texts from the 19th century until today.

Arctic discourses connected to, for example, cold, gendered heroism, and madness, are traced through history, from expedition narrative to the predominantly speculative fiction of today. Ecocritical perspectives inform the analyses in order to place the development in the Arctic, and how it is depicted, in a global context.

The teaching language is English, and knowledge of Swedish is not required.
