HSI 2020 offers over 150 courses in various fields: around 30 courses for undergraduate students and around 120 courses for graduate students.
Hokkaido Summer lnstitute (HSI) is a program that brings together world-leading researchers with proven educational and research records, and provides educational courses in cooperation with the Hokkaido University (HU) faculty members. In 2020, more than 160 researchers from all over the world will gather at HU.
HSI also allows its participants to expand their knowledge of subjects in world-class research fields of HU which used to be open only to HU students. Program participants have an opportunity to attend classes by attractive educational techniques such as field training using Hokkaido's extensive land, and active learning to develop human resources capable of thriving on the world stage.
The medium of instruction at HSI is English. This provides international students with a stress-free learning environment without having to worry about language barriers, and also creates a special opportunity for Japanese students, who can participate in classes taught by internationally acclaimed researchers.
HSI 2020 will offer over 150 courses ranging from bachelor to PhD level during the summer (June-October) 2020. Many of the courses are 1 week to 2 weeks in length. You can combine courses according to your major and interests.

1 credit or 2 credits will be awarded upon completion of each course.
Tuition fee: 14,800 JPY per credit
- Tuition fee will be waived for students from HU's partner institutions under certain conditions.
- Application Fee (9,800 JPY) and Entrance Fee (28,200 JPY) will be charged to non-student applicants.
Application period varies depending on the begin date of the courses. The online early application period runs from February 3-21, 2020.
