The Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS), in collaboration with the Canadian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH-CNC), organized GeoMontréal 2024, the 77th Canadian Geotechnical Conference and the 16th Joint CGS/IAH-CNC Groundwater Conference. The conference was held at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montréal, QC, Canada, from Sunday, September 15 to Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

The GeoMontréal 2024 conference theme was resilient geosciences for future generations, featuring technical sessions on subjects of broad interest in the geotechnical and hydrogeological fields. In addition to the technical program and plenary sessions, the conference also featured distinguished keynote speakers, high-calibre short courses, technical tours, and social events.

The UArctic project PermaIntern and SEDNA were presented at the conference and introduced during networking events at the conference. These projects are linked to the Thematic Network on Permafrost. The events were attended by between 50 and 400 people, including students, academics, and industry professionals.

Young Professionals Mentoring Session

Sunday, September 15, 2024 | 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

 

The 15-minute presentation on PermaIntern and SEDNA projects were presented at the Young Professionals Mentoring Session. This event targeted students and young professionals interested in potential internship opportunities

At this event, the “speed-date” introduction style allowed to promote both The PermaIntern and SEDNA projects in small groups around the table

Icebreaker and Exhibitor Reception

Numerous industry representatives attended the icebreaker and tradeshow, where business cards were exchanged and potential collaborations regarding internship opportunities were discussed with industry partners.

Monday, September 16, 2024 | 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Technical presentation on “Benchmark validation of a new numerical tool for settlement prediction of freezing and thawing ground in cold regions" were presented, and acknowledgement was provided for partial travelling funding through the UArctic.

Geotechnical Cold Regions Engineering Committee Meeting

Tuesday, September 17, 2024 | 5:00 p.m. - 5:50 p.m.

A 10-minute presentation on the PermaIntern and SEDNA projects were presented at the Cold Regions Engineering committee meeting with over 30 participants from academia and industry groups. Questions were answered with the exchange of business cards.

Women's Networking Breakfast

Tuesday, September 17, 2024 | 7:00 a.m.

This event aimed to encourage discussions on how to support and engage women in the geotechnical field. It included a quick speech from CGS Executive Committee members, personal introductions, breakfast for all attendees, and time for casual networking. Business cards were exchanged at the tables at the break, and questions regarding both projects were answered.
