Two field courses on innovations in aquaculture and marine resources, UWestfjords, March-April 2015

University Centre of the Westfjords organizes two field courses on innovations in aquaculture (22-27 March 2015) and marine resource utilisation (28 March-3 April 2015). The courses are offered in the Marine Innovation master’s program but are open to external participants. Apply by 6 March 2015.
The first course is focused on innovation in aquaculture while the second course focuses on innovations in the sustainable utilization of algae and other coastal resources.
The “Blue Economy” is no longer just about fishing and fish processing. In the Westfjords, for example, aquaculture has made a sizeable niche for itself, and the increasing uses for seaweeds, kelp and other resources are revealing new opportunities for the marine economy of the future. There are also often ways of increasing value by connecting the Blue Economy with the Green Economy.
The courses benefit from having agencies working in the field right on their doorstep and company visits are an essential course component. Students are versed in the opportunities and challenges of cold water aquaculture in the first course, while the second course focuses on innovations in the sustainable utilisation of coastal resources. At the end of each course students work on a business plan for an innovation project of their own choosing.
