Earlier this month the chair of the Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials, Patrick Borbey met with members of UArctic’s Board of Governors in Rykjavik, Iceland to discuss possible ways that UArctic could help enhance and support Arctic Council working groups. One of the suggested ways that UArctic could provide assistance is by helping with the development of guidelines to protect traditional ways of life in the Arctic.
Also during the meetings in Reykjavik, UArctic’s new Vice-President Indigenous was formally appointed during a signing ceremony on Oct 12th, 2013. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) and the University of the Arctic was signed by UArctic President, Lars Kullerud and MUN President, Gary Kachanoski. The President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, was also present at the signing.
UArctic’s Vice-President Indigenous, Keith Chaulk, who is from Labrador and of Inuit heritage, currently is the director of Memorial University’s Labrador Institute. Recently, for a morning radio show on CBC Labrador, Keith was interviewed by reporter Mike Power of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation about his UArctic appointment.

UArctic delegation at Arctic Council - Senior Arctic Officials (SAO) meeting in Whitehorse

The first SAO meeting of the Canadian Chairmanship is being held in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, from October 22nd to 23rd, 2013, and the UArctic delegation is represented by James McDonald, Chair of the Council of UArctic; Keith Chaulk, UArctic’s newly appointed Vice-President Indigenous; and Karen Barnes, President of Yukon College.
