The objective of the Assembly was to address the impact of dwindling ice – terrestrial, the Arctic, the Himalayans and Antarctica as well as ocean bound - on the complex interface of nature and society in all climatic zones of the world. In light of the man-made part of climate change, particularly meaning global warming, and the natural phenomena of ice is gradually becoming a concept of global politics – a common heritage of humankind- affecting societal life in quite dramatic ways on a global scale.
In addition to presentations by young researchers - who are a key component of all NRF meetings - the programme included Dr. Anil V. Kulkarni addressing the issue of glacier changes in the Himalayas as well as Mr. Edward Itta, Mayor of North Slope Borough, Alaska.
The Arctic Portal streamed the sessions live on the web, and will host more pictures and video from the meeting.
Professor Lonnie Thompson from the School of Earth Science will present in the session about Implications of the Ice Melt.

Under the theme "Our Ice Dependent World, the sixth Northern Research Forum (NRF) successfully took place on the 4th and 5th of September in Hveragerdi, Iceland. Dr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, President of Iceland (pictured) as well as Kupik Kleist, the Premier of Greenland, spoke during the opening session.
