UArctic Atlas Website Officially Launched
The UArctic Atlas has officially gone online, as it was just launched at the SIU Higher Education Conference in
Tromso, Norway. Users can now visit atlas.uarctic.org to see the first
available maps, organized into five major theme areas including
'Environment, Climate and Ecosystems' and 'Socio-Economics and
Politics'. More maps will be added in the near future, as well as
interpretive information such as overview articles and case studies.
"We really see this as a platform for future development," said Scott
Forrest, project director, in launching the Atlas in Tromso today. "By
creating an online atlas, we can gradually add more content in
cooperation with our data provider partners." Current map layers have been contributed by the National Sea Ice Data Centre, GRID-Arendal, the Arctic Council, the Alaska Geobotany Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the CARMA project. The UArctic Atlas has been developed by the University of the Arctic with the support of StatoilHydro.
