Traditional knowledge/Árbediehtu
Sámi University College offers a 30-credit study in traditional knowledge. The program is a part-time study with meetings decentralized to the coastal areas of Troms and Finnmark combined with online education. Place of meetings is determined this spring. The language is Sami / Norwegian / English (with linguistic adaptation or possibly translation).
The study, "Traditional knowledge; theory, method and traditional knowledge as a basis for management of resources" introduces the students to traditional knowledge in general and Sami traditional knowledge in particular, and the value of these knowledge systems, today and in the future. The emphasis is on scientific approaches to this knowledge, including documentation methods, and how traditional knowledge can contribute to strengthen local communities and indigenous livelihoods. A long-term goal is to document traditional knowledge, so it can be the basis for public decision-making. The target groups are managers, educators and others with an interest in traditional knowledge.
This is a formal education in documentation and dissemination of traditional knowledge, and is the result of the Árbediehtu project program which consists of three parts and is structured as follows:
Part 1: Theoretical approach to traditional knowledge and methods of documentation and dissemination of traditional knowledge, 15 credits (autumn semester)
Part 2: Traditional knowledge as a basis for management of resources in the North, 15 credits(spring semester)
